When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

Root canal treatments are most often used to eliminate infections in the tooth roots and prevent the spread of the infection to other teeth, or even to other areas of the body. Although the teeth are made up of hard outer shells, there is also an inner soft tissue inside the teeth, known as tooth “pulp.” This pulp is susceptible to infection, and when infections occur, it’s important to deal with them quickly to prevent their spread.

How Root Canal Treatments Work

When we complete a root canal treatment, we’ll begin by making you comfortable and using a local anesthetic to numb the area that will be treated. Then, we’ll begin the procedure by making a small hole in the top of the tooth. Our dental team will clear out the infected inner pulp of the tooth completely, fill the area with a substance called gutta percha, and then reseal the tooth. We will most often create and fit a dental crown to completely seal and strengthen the tooth.
